CHAPTER 25

Guin paced around the condo. It had been raining all morning, and she was feeling restless. She had so many questions and no answers. If only the detective would share a little information, it would make her job, and her life, so much easier.

She sat at her computer and ran a Google search for Billy Simms. There were thousands of hits, most of them having to do with his football career. She scrolled through, hoping to find something, though she wasn’t exactly sure what. She found the story from his freshman year, when a freshman woman had accused him of groping her, but other than that she could find no negative stories. No accusations of assault, no shoplifting, not even breaking curfew.

She sat back in her chair. No one’s that perfect, she thought. What about Ronnie Swales?

She typed Veronica Swales into her browser, hoping to find out a little more about the young woman. She had already done a search, when she had found out the young woman’s name, but maybe she had missed something. She scrolled through the search results. Who knew there were that many people named Veronica Swales?

She typed Veronica Swales UCF. That narrowed it down.

She clicked on “Images” and saw several of Ronnie in a cheerleading outfit. In the pictures she was jumping and smiling. So alive. Guin sighed and kept scrolling and saw photos of Ronnie with Billy, Ronnie in her cheerleading outfit, Billy in his football uniform. They made a handsome couple.

She went back to the main page and clicked on a couple of the links. Veronica was from the Atlanta area and had been a cheerleader in high school.

Guin also found her Facebook page, but she was only able to see a few photos. She grabbed her phone and went to Ronnie’s Instagram page. She scrolled through the photos again, more slowly this time, and found a few that had been taken at the bakery, including one of Ronnie with Jake and Jean-Luc. There were also a few older photos of her with Billy and Jake. Something about the way Jake looked at her…

Had Jake been telling her the truth about them being just friends? Maybe he wasn’t entirely over her. And what had he and Ronnie argued about just before she was killed?

Guin sighed.

“Where are you Jake?” she said aloud.

She glanced back down at Ronnie’s Instagram feed. Just then her stomach let out a loud gurgle. She looked at the time. How did it get to be one o’clock already? She needed to meet Polly at two. But if she didn’t eat something, she wouldn’t be able to focus.

She went into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. Why hadn’t she gotten more food at Bailey’s when she was in town? She checked the freezer. Well, there was always ice cream and Trader Joe’s chocolate-covered almonds! She thought about having ice cream for lunch for a few seconds, then she shook her head. What she needed was protein, not sugar. She sighed again and made a mental note to make up some meals to keep in the freezer.
